The hairdressers at Hers and His Beauty Salon in Conway wanted to do something special for a special little girl.

When the women learned that 7-year-old Stephanie Edge lost her hair while undergoing radiation treatments for cancer, they decided a beautiful, new wig might lift her spirits.

“We love Stephanie and we wanted to do something special for her,” said Cynthia Duke. “She’s very special to all of us here.”

The staff of Hers and His are members of the local Conway Affiliate #28 Hairdressers Association and participate in a Look Good…Feel Better program sponsored by the National Cosmetology Association, American Cancer Society and the Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA Foundation).

Although the Look Good…Feel Better program focuses primarily on helping adult women overcome the appearance-related side effects of cancer, the hairdressers wanted to help Stephanie because she is one of their customers and they know how special she is. They teamed up with Coastal Affiliate #15 in Myrtle Beach to find the perfect wig for Stephanie. The two affiliates purchased the wig and presented it to her Monday afternoon.

Edge, who was diagnosed with Leukemia ALC this past May, travels to Palmetto Richland Heath in Columbia once a week for treatments. She is two weeks into a delayed intensification treatment process.

The daughter of Darena and Steve Edge is a homebound student, but attends second grade classes at Aynor Elementary School when she feels up to it. Mrs. Edge said Stephanie recently commented to her that she is blessed and loves her life despite what she is going through.

“Stephanie has a very strong faith,” her mother said. “She didn’t worry too much about losing her hair. She said it will grow back. It’s just hair.” Stephanie enjoys watching The Disney Channel and loves both live and stuffed animals, and has a pet border collie named Molly. She wants a laptop computer for Christmas. Stephanie attends Brown Swamp United Methodist Church and her favorite food is macaroni and cheese.

According to Mrs. Edge, the love and support of people like the staff at Hers and His has been overwhelming.

“This is a great community,” she said. “These women here have been great. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.”

According to doctors, the cure rate for the type leukemia Stephanie has is about 80 percent.
